"When I think of Quebecois culture I think white, which excludes me"

If someone asks me where I’m from, I tell them I’m born here and that I’m half Ivorian
and Haitian. I do identify as a Quebecois, and most people that hear me speak
French do too because of my accent. I don’t feel like I belong at all to the Quebecois
culture, in fact, people of colour are rarely represented on the screen in French
Quebecois TV shows—it’s as though we barely exist and they make us believe that we are not as multicultural as they say we are. When I think of Quebecois culture I think white,
which excludes me. I am only Quebecois because I am born here, that’s all. I believe that’s maybe what they want us to believe. On Saint-Jean Baptiste, white Quebecois culture (ex:
music) is celebrated, but not us. Even if I don’t feel a sense of belonging, Quebecois is
what I am and who I am!
